Emily Flying Boat
Many earlier reports on the three bombing raids on Townsville stated that the Japanese aircraft were Mavis flying boats. Original intelligence reports have since confirmed that they were in fact the giant four engined H8K2 flying boat known as the Emily. Their huge range allowed them to operate from Rabaul in New Guinea for these raids on Townsville. They would leave each afternoon and their crew of nine would travel for 10 - 15 hours for a return trip of almost 5,000 kms.
