During WW2 there were underground RAN Naval Fuel tanks on a hill in the vicinity of the Queensland Newspapers building adjacent to the corner of Lytton Road and Creek Road at Murrarie. Fuel pipes ran down the hill to the nearby Murrarie Cruiser berth on the Brisbane River.

There were three very large round concrete underground oil tanks. Only the tops of the tanks were exposed out of the ground. They were about 10 metres in diameter and about the same in depth, with an iron ladder that lead down into them through a 1 metre square opening at the top. They were demolished to make way for the Queensland Newspapers site.

There were three other RAN concrete above ground fuel tanks located at nearby Colmslie.
