Camp Warwick (or Warwick Farm) was used by the American troops during WWII as a staging area. Leon Sanger's father was at Camp Warwick from 6 July until 7 August 1943, when he shipped out on the Dutch troop ship "Cremer" for Port Moresby making a four day stop at Townsville (where he could not depart the ship).

The 166th AAA Gun Battalion travelled to Australia on the USS West Point, a converted luxury liner. They arrived in Sydney, New South Wales and camped at Camp Warwick from 11 October 1943 until 8 November 1943.

The unit left Sydney headed for Townsville on about 8 November 1943. They camped overnight at Camp Ascot in Brisbane on their way to Townsville.

T/Sgt Dooley of the 166th AAA Gun Battalion stated in his diary:-

Traveled on U.S.S West Point to Sydney, Australia. Arrived at Sydney October 10, 1943. Spent about one month visiting Sydney and having a swell time. Beer, Rum and women. Traveled on train to Townsville and had a nice trip. Spent one night at Camp Ascot, Brisbane. Went to a show in Townsville two or three times. All in all I enjoyed my stay in Australia.

The 4th Engineer Amphibian Brigade arrived in Sydney on the USS West Point on 12 May 1944.
