There was a secret Japanese Prisoner of War Camp located in the mangroves at Thompson's Point on the Fitzroy River to the south east of Rockhampton in central Queensland during World War 2.

There was breakout of some Japanese prisoners on one occasion and tow Japanese prisoners were shot and killed. They were buried at nearby Port Alma. Their grave sites are unmarked but a number of local residents are still familiar with the exact location of these graves.
