SPANISH CONSUL IN AUSTRALIA
A POSSIBLE AXIS SPY LEADING UP TO WW2

As far back as 1936, the Spanish Consul in Australia, Pedro de Ygual, was know to be sympathetic to the Axis powers. The Australian Government however still continued to approve his official diplomatic status. He was closely monitored by the Australian Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB)
The Australian Department of External Affairs commented in a Cablegram to the British External Affairs Officer in London on 10 February 1943, that Ygual was a known Franco supporter.
