What appears to be another ventilation pipe in the paddock between the quarry and Archerfield aerodrome. Was this for the mysterious tunnel? I found at least two of these ventilation pipes in an alignment parallel to Beatty Road. There may have been more. |
Are they really Ventilation pipes? I think they are more likely to be covers for some test bores that were done a number of years ago, well after World War 2.

Had a look at the Archerfield "ventilation pipes" last week. One of them has been drilled and a piece of conduit inserted into the hole??.
The conduit goes down about 4 metres and stops. At the bottom is "mud" but it has a very strange, old musty smell about it, similar to the smell you get when you smell a piece of old electrical equipment or radio set. If these pipes were really ventilation shafts then they would be constructed so as to stop the ingress of water or other items from penetrating further into the complex, if it exists at all. I have been told that during the 74 floods, this area would have been underwater. If this is correct then any tunnel complex would have been flooded and could now be filled with mud, hence the smelly mud at the bottom of the pipes. Any ideas on the above or who put in the conduit??

The two pipes in the area between the quarry and the aerodrome are ground-water monitoring wells. These wells are two out of nine located randomly about the airport
