Saturday - Day 1
The afternoon was again
split into 2 actives - a social ride to the top of the mountain and a bus trip
to the Booie Range Distillery and Cranes Boutique Winery.
19 riders took the opportunity for a run to the top of the mountain while a
further 21 people took the bus to sample some of the South Burnett Area
drinking delights.
On the
buses Bunya Rally tour -
We have been fortunate to be able to borrow a bus
to conduct the Saturday afternoon excursion as a part of the Bunya Mountains
Rally weekend. There is usually sufficient interest from visitors to fill the
bus, and we try to find a destination that might interest people.
This year, we advertised that we were planning to
go to a couple of local wineries, and there was surprising interest. People
phoned to book onto the bus, to ensure they had a seat, more than a week before
the event.
Booie Range Distillery was selected as a venue, mainly
because of its location. It is perched on top of the range, and offers superb
scenery to the east. Patrons can choose to wine and dine either inside the
restaurant or outside on the veranda.
Even though they were advised in plenty of time of
the number arriving and the ETA, they seemed to take some time to serve
afternoon tea to all who wanted it.
A few motorcyclists who couldn’t fit on the
bus were given instructions on how to get to the distillery. The bus arrived
well before them, and they were seen riding past the venue, down the range and
on to the next winery. After instructions from one of our members who works at the Crane Winery, they made their way back up the
range to join us.
After cake and coffee at the distillery, we
ventured on to Crane Winery, where Peter McFarlane introduced us to the various
wines, then poured a taste for each person interested. After several tastes,
the party became a little noisier, and one lady had a little trouble
negotiating the steps from the sales room, all 2 of them!
The bus seemed a bit slower on the way back to Kumbia – maybe the extra weight of the bottles of
wine (not to mention the 4L’s of port). There were requests to go through
the middle of town, which doesn’t take long in Kingaroy,
and to see where Joh lives. So we did a bit of
touring on the way back, and by all accounts it was well appreciated.
If we are still able to access the bus for the next
Bunya rally, we’ll try to organize a microphone so that all can hear what
we were describing up at the front of the bus. We could also find someone who
is a guru on the area to commentate for you. If you have any suggestions to
improve this, or any aspect of the rally weekend, please let’s have them.
We thank all who went on the bus trip for their
interest, and for the positive comments regarding the trip and the rally.
The Kumbia and District
Historical Society hosted dinner Saturday evening for campers as well as
breakfast Sunday morning.

Morning Tea stop.
The fastest of the short
route riders started to arrive about
Morning tea was 1 hour
this year to give people a chance to have a chat before getting back on the
road. There was a bit of overlap as short route riders prepared to leave and
the long route rider began to arrive. Food this year was a little different
with the ladies looking after the cakes and other sweet things while the boys
did snags on the BBQ. As lunch was being served back at the camp site, most
people were careful not to overindulge.
Both routes followed the
same track back after morning tea with the short route rider about an hour
ahead on the road. For the first time in many years there was one DNS and one
DNF on each route plus one restart after running out of fuel and having to wait
for the sweeper.
With everyone safely back,
more food and coffee before the trophies were awarded and the score sheets were
handed out.
By the comments during
lunch, I think everyone enjoyed the runs this year. The routes took us further
from the mountain to areas many had not visited in the 20 years the rally has
been run. Both the Saturday bus trip and
run up the Bunya’s again proved very popular. The positive and negative comments were noted
for discussion by the Rally Committee (especially the one about the BBQ) so
hopefully we can make the 2005 Bunya Mountains Rally even better.
See you on the first weekend in May
2005 for the 21st
