May - September 2001

Didn't do any work on the bike for May - sorting out the Wolseley 4/44 for the National Rally. Had an excellent week away on the rally. It was rather unfortunate that the Wolseley Rally was the same week as the HMCCQ Round the Clubs Rally. Round the Clubs is held every 15 years - I rode the '33 Matchless last time (actually the first time the rally was run) and was looking forward to being one of the few to run the same bike at both rallies. I had registered for the Wolseley rally in early 2000; about a year before the HMCCQ rally date was set. Didn't miss all the action though. Sunday was Day 1 for both rallies with the cars setting up for a week of activities based round Towoomba and the HMCCQ group were overnighting in Towoomba. Funny as a circus - both groups were booked to the same motel AND double-booked for dinner at the same Hotel. Motel was fine and everyone had a bed for the night, but dinner was interesting. There were 128 people on the bike rally and 105 on the car rally.

Progress for the last 6 months:
Not much has happened on the project since stopping work in April to get ready for the Wolseley Rally. There have been quite a few distractions on the home front that needed to be taken care of; not least of which was the fact that we have just past through our winter months. Spring is here and I have put in a little time in the shed.

Progress:

I have been doing a course on welding. Useful new skills when you are rebuilding and restoring old cars and bikes. As a training project, I used the plasma cutter to cut new torque arms for the front brake hubs and for the gas fusion welding I built the link rod for the back brake.

• Sorted out new torque arms for the brake hubs. These arms pick up both bolt holes formly used to mount the front mud guard. Less chance of pulling out a bolt with the load across both bolts on each side.
• Manufactured a brake rod for the rear brakes. Turned the hub brake lever 180 degrees so it is now vertical and pulls to the front.
• Finished off the rearsets - gearchange linkage and back brake, set the angles for the brake and gear levers.
• Mounted 5" headlight
